My current theoretical victim is the S2, basically a miniature Can-Am car powered by a 2-liter pinto or Zetec engine. They can usually be bought for around $20-40k, depending on year, engine, etc.
So, what would be the most outrageous engine to put in these cars performance-wise, but still complies to the ideals of (relatively) inexpensive, easy to find, and easy to source parts?
So to those of you who are more familiar with car manufacturers’ engine line-ups, what do you think? These cars have been around since the early 80’s, so any production-based engine between then and now, with more than 4 cylinders is fair game.

As much as I hate to say it, LSx or LTx.

Oh my god that supercharger....

AMG V8. Yes the LSx is just as powerful, lighter and cheaper... But I had a point....
well a 6.3l V8 makes an argument all on it's own. A supercharged 5.5l makes one as well. Both engines should be dropping in price since their cars still are.

I know you said > 4 Cylinders, but why not an Ecotec Turbo? It’s lightweight, compact, and will just about fit in the same space, and make way more power. In stock trim they make 260-290HP, depending on the application, and with some very basic mods (ported stock turbo, ECU tuning) you can push almost 400HP.

Seems like logic would say to stick with Ford motors. You could swap in a simple 302 or HiPo 289 build or you could go modern and swap in a 3.0 V6. Don’t doubt the build-able-ness of a 3.0, if you do I’ll direct you to Noble.
